One of the main problems and concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) is unwanted bias introduced by AI algorithms and their underlying datasets. A particular concern is the introduction of such bias in the employee recruitment and hiring process. Thankfully, work is being done to offset, and hopefully greatly reduce, such bias. In that regard the U.S. Department of Labor has just published an AI and Inclusive Hiring Framework, which informs and supports inclusive practices in hiring, with an emphasis on hiring persons with disabilities.[i]

What makes this resource quite useful is how it offers ten practical focus areas that employers can adopt in AI governance and hiring initiatives to promote disability-inclusive processes. The Department of Labor based this resource on the AI Risk Management Framework that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released in January 2023.

Previous Vantage Point blog posts have emphasized the importance of sound management practices in both workforce management and the application of artificial intelligence.[ii]  It is good to see these areas addressed together in this new hiring framework. AI and its application to court administration continues to be a hot topic, and many court administrators and judges feel overwhelmed with information and need help understanding and applying AI. The new AI and Inclusive Hiring Framework is very timely in meeting this need.
